Along with
the rapid growth in information
technology, the Web site of an organization is becoming the show
window to millions of Internet users world-wide. A well designed
one contributes to building up a good corporate image. While
all Web sites are competing for the world's attention, what makes
one outplay the others? It is generally believed that a Web site
is judged not only by the richness of its contents, but also by
its way of organizing information. More importantly, a comfortable
and uniform look-and-feel user environment always acts as the
primal factor for attracting Internet readers to make their first-time
visit to a Web site.
So, how about our Web site? Does our site
meet the above-mentioned criteria? Maybe it is resourceful.
While individual departments of our University is responsible
for maintaining its own Web pages and ensuring the data are most
current, we are certainly lacking a consistent Web page style
to exhibit the spirit of our University. As such, some standardization
in the Web page styles and information organization is highly
desirable. The Computing Services Centre (CSC) therefore consolidated
some useful guidelines and good practice of Web publications into
a newly prepared booklet entitled "Guidelines on Web Publication
in City University of Hong Kong". Free copies were distributed
to every departmental office. Standard Web page layouts are included
in the booklet for reference. The corresponding Web page templates
can also be retrieved from the Web. Departments can simply copy
the Web templates and follow the guidelines listed to edit their
Web pages.
Since training is essential for the successful
implementation of the Web publication guidelines, the CSC will
offer a series of training workshops and Web authoring courses
for departmental Web publishers. Do watch out for our announcement
on the Network Message Board and CSC News.
