In July, the management of the Computing Services
Centre (CSC) was very much honored to have the chance to discuss
vis-a-vis with Professor H.K. Chang , the President of CityU regarding
the Centre's operations, difficulties and aspirations.
During his three visits to the CSC, the President
attended a computer presentation on CSC's operations, had a guided
tour around the Centre, and held an open discussion with our colleagues.
In the meeting, different views on the University's as well as
the Centre's future direction, difficulties encountered and possible
solutions were exchanged. All of these activites were held within
two weeks which, according to Professor Chang, had broken his
record of visits to departments. This probably reflected his
high hopes placed on the work of the CSC.
Our CSC colleagues were most impressed by the
President at the meeting. The President demonstrated an in-depth
knowledge of CSC despite its complexity in operation. More so,
they were much delighted to learn about the President's keen concern
for the Centre's well being as he considered the Centre as an
important part of the University's operations.
Professor Chang stated that, 50 years ago,
a university would probably run well without a computer centre,
but now, computers are so important that a university could never
function properly without the help of a good computer centre.
He further revealed that, prior to joining
CityU, he had learnt that the CSC was innovative in the use of
information technology. He urged us to keep up the good work
and maintain our competitive edges. While being encouraged by
the President's recognition of our past efforts and achievement,
the CSC is excited by learning that we have the President's whole-hearted
support to the goal of staying as the best computer centre in
Hong Kong.
