With the CityLink Plus service you can now connect directly to the Internet and enjoy easier access to the tremendous amount of information out there even when you are not in our campus. One might begin to ask, "What's the difference between CityLink and CityLink Plus?". To avoid confusion, the table on next page aims to give an answer to the question.

CityLink PlusCityLink
Hardware Requirement (Minimum)
  • A 486 PC.
  • 10MB of free hard disk space.
  • A 3.5" floppy disk drive.
  • A 14400bps modem or better.
Same hardware as CityLink Plus will be preferable. But it can work with a slower CPU, 2MB of free hard disk space and a lower speed modem.
Software RequirementFor Windows 3.1 users,
  • CityLink Plus software provided by CSC.
For Windows 95 users,
  • Windows 95’s "Dial-up Networking" utility.
  • appropriate Netscape version for the environment.
  • DOS.
  • CityLink software, i.e. PC-240 emulator and communication programs provided by CSC.
Computer Skills
  • Modem usage.
  • Intermediate windows and Internet knowledge.
  • Modem usage.
  • Basic DOS knowledge, such as file copying and program execution.
  • Basic PC-240 emulator usage.
User InterfaceGraphical environment with multi-media supported by the Web browser - Netscape.Text basis menu selection using keyboard.
Services
  • Direct connection to the Internet for accessing numerous WWW, FTP and Telnet sites.
  • Ability to access CityLink services via a Telnet session.
  • Same as those available from the departmental LAN DOS level "Information Services Menu".
  • Access the WWW using Lynx, a text-based Internet browser.
Help
  • Refer to the CityLink Plus User’s Guide for programs installation, how to connect to CSC’s PPP server. Configuration of the Windows 95’s "Dial-up Networking" utility is also mentioned in the User’s Guide.
  • On-line help is available within each individual Internet tool.
  • Refer to the CityLink User’s Guide for modem and program setup.
  • Separate User’s Guides are published for using the services and host computers, for example, the PolyLink User’s Guide, Using VAX/VMS, Using the SUN system, etc.
