Local Windows Support

 

With the increasing demand of speed for running network Windows, a new service for installation of local Windows was introduced by CSC. The primary goal is to allow intensive Windows users to run their Windows applications residing on their local hard disk while at the same time, enjoy other network services such as email and Internet services previously only available in the network Windows.

Under network Windows environment, if you want to attach new peripherals to your desktop PC such as CD ROM, sound blaster, display card etc., you must fill in a form and request CSC staff to install the necessary drivers. With the local Windows support, you are free to configure your PC environment to suit your needs. You can install additional hardware at any time you want. An added benefit is that the operation of the local Windows is not affected by the network environment. You will be able to run local Windows regardless of the network status and all network modules can be installed or removed from memory with a single command. By downloading from a dedicated server, users can install or reinstall Windows and Windows applications from that server to their local hard disks.

Ah! Now you know the advantages of local Windows, do you want to go for it? Well! There are several things you need to check before you begin any download process. We recommend you to read carefully the details on the conditions and explanations of using this service which are available in the "Display local Windows Help File" option under the Departmental Local Windows Library menu. Next, you should purchase licenses for the software you use and ensure that a minimum of 33 MB hard disk space is available for just the local Windows software itself. You should set aside additional space to cater for each Windows application you download onto your hard disk. In order for CSC to administer the usage of this service, you will be prompted for a password when the download process is started. Please obtain it from your computer liaison officer.
