Horizontal Rule Issue Date

[Window]The Computing Services Centre was asked to organize the University-wide implementation of Windows environment. A budget request for upgrading computer facilities in the University for implementing a Windows environment for all staff was hence submitted in March. The funds requested were based on the Centre's survey of such requirement in the departments in last October. In May, funds were allocated for the following items :

(i) Upgrade of lower end PC to 486

(ii) Upgrade of existing 486 PC to 8 MB RAM

(iii) Upgrade of network card

(iv) Upgrade of departmental LAN server

(v) Provision of a central set of essential Windows software for use on LAN

The upgrade covers only staff machines. Student machines are excluded. Moreover, hard disks and monitors are not covered. Departments have to source the funds if they have the need of more disk space or monitors of better resolution. Departments may also use their funds to further upgrade their PC to 16 MB RAM or 586 PCs.

The budget allocated to this exercise is $7.96m. instead of the originally requested figure of $9.96m, as it was assumed that some of the above mentioned upgrades in some departments have already been completed in the past months using their own funds and hence should be excluded from this exercise.

This upgrade exercise will start in September and is estimated to take about 4 to 6 months to complete.
