WordPerfect User Group

Horizontal Rule Issue Date

WordPerfect User GroupTo support CityU staff who use word processors, the Computing Services Centre (CSC) started the WordPerfect User Group several months ago. About every two months, the group meets to share successes and frustrations with WordPerfect, although discussion on other software packages is welcome. The group's facilitator, David Lam, also assists as needed for bigger technical problems.

With the group, CSC's Information Services Section aims to fill the gap between organized courses and the computer hotline. The first is good for users starting out, and the second is good for solving problems. In between, staff can benefit from support that not just solves but also anticipates their unique difficulties.

In between meetings, members can use an electronic bulletin board to air their concerns. When they come to a meeting, they then discuss different problems and solutions, and push themselves with tricky word processor operations David gives them. At every session, members also receive a gift of solutions to problems encountered in the past. Over time, David comments that "We would like to see users running the group themselves." With this approach the group will be self-supporting, and consequently members will enjoy increased ability and confidence at work.

If you are interested in the group, all staff are welcome and meetings are announced by network message board. The meetings are predominantly in Cantonese, although English speakers are of course welcome to come. Alternatively, non-Cantonese speakers can use the Staff Channels bulletin board to get tips for their own work. The group looks forward to seeing you there - call David at x8297 with any questions.
