Partnerships with Universities in China

Horizontal Rule align= Issue Date

Hands As part of CityU's effort to develop cooperation with Universities in China, the Computing Services Centre (CSC) and three mainland universities have been working together for several years. These universities are Peking University, Zhongshan University, and Tsinghua University. This involves various projects and areas of mutual assistance, and enables us and our partners to learn from each other and complement mutual strengths.

At present, the Computing Services Centre works with Peking University to develop an integrated automated library system. This will manage materials not just in English, but also Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. Four areas will be covered, including circulation, cataloguing, acquisition, and serials control. Two versions will be made available to cope with differences in cataloguing methods in China and elsewhere. This project should be completed in about two years, and will enhance both CityU's and Peking U's libraries, and potentially universities throughout China.

The Computing Services Centre first started to work with Zhongshan University in 1986. At that time, Zhongshan applied and modified the model and method of establishing our management information systems to develop its own. This makes it one of the few mainland universities to develop Management Information Systems (MIS) in-house.

Zhongshan University now partners with the CSC to develop central administrative systems to benefit both Zhongshan and CityU. Through a joint software development centre in Zhongshan, they work with us on a number of systems. This project started approximately four years ago.

CSC also cooperates with Tsinghua University to produce CITYDIS, a distributed information system explained in detail in another article. Similar to our exchange with Zhongshan, Tsinghua also partners with us in programming and testing.
