New Menus for Unix Users
A user-friendly menu interface was implemented by CC on the UNIX system. Now you can click a selected option and the system will do the tedious job for you, so there is no need to remember different lengthy commands anymore. With this menu system you can now:
- Set-up a software environment.
- Display manual pages written by the Computer Centre.
- Start OpenWindows menu utilities.
- Exit to a C-shell or run a UNIX command.
- Start a new command tool/xterm/cxterm window.
- Start Emacs or windows-based editors.
- Manipulate a floppy disk.
- Start software, e.g. Ghostview/Gnuplot/Gopher/Lisp/MapleV/Matlab/Miranda/Octave/Wais/WWW. Start the news reading software, tin.
- Start the Motif programming tutor.
Your terminal will tell you which options you can use, as your terminal choice affects the options available. Help and search functions are also provided. To start the menu system, at the command prompt simply enter menu. To quit the system at any time, press the [esc] key or select the [exit] option.
