With the successful installation of the University’s Video Backbone Network, our first video service - Video-on-Demand System (VoD) was launched on 12 April 1999. It is similar to the iTV of the Hong Kong Telecom, but is confined to campus users only. Video materials are transformed into digital format and stored as MPEG I files in the central VoD server for delivery throughout the campus network. Colleagues who are interested in using this service can bring videotapes (VHS) or videodiscs (VCD or LD) to the Media Production Service (MPS) inside the CSC Student Terminal Area for encoding. However, colleagues are reminded to ensure that the encoded materials are licenced before having them placed on the central VoD server.

Once encoded, you can play your video on a PC as a Windows 95 application anywhere within campus including lecture theatres, classrooms and offices. For viewing the VoD materials, colleagues may simply go to the Departmental Applications Menu of the Staff LAN, and select CityVoD:Video-on-Demand. Alternatively, colleagues may choose the VideoNet option in our Intranet Web page or visit the Web site directly at http://www.cityu.edu.hk/videonet/vmain.htm. Thereafter, select CityVoD to invoke the service. To allow students to access this free service, 2 CSC teaching studios (Room Ceres and Room Orion) have been set up for their use. The minimum configuration of client PC is Pentium 200 MMX with 32MB RAM and some devices may affect performance. Without proper configuration, problems may occur which include time-out, poor video quality, broken sound and long starting time. If you need assistance, please call our Help Desk at ext. 7658. For enquiry, please contact Mr. Joe Chow at ext. 8848.
