When you are connecting to the Internet, sometimes the downloading time is so long that your patience is tried. One of the reasons behind this phenomenon may be that the connection speed of the modem line is not fast enough. To enable our users to enjoy a faster access to the Internet, the University has upgraded some of the modem lines to 56K speed.
There are in total 288 modem lines which
operate in 56K speed. This 56K modem pool is of the standard K56flex, which is the
interoperable modem protocol that enables high speed Internet downloads over standard
telephone lines.
For traditional modems, it is assumed that both ends of a modem have an analog connection, one to the home computer and the other to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). However, K56flex technology makes a different assumption: the one end of a modem that connects to an ISP/corporation/university through the phone network (e.g. PSTN) has a pure-digital connection which allows high-speed data transfer. By taking this end as a digital network, K56flex technology enables data to be propelled downstream from the Internet to your computer at a much higher speed.
To take advantage of this upgrade, you need to install a K56flex compliant modem in your home computer. If you are in doubt, please contact our Help Desk at ext. 7658 for assistance.
