Do you feel like polishing your computer knowledge? If so, come to our CSC Forum. Are you interested in a particular service or facility offered by the CSC? If so, join us at our casual Small Talks. Do you have a computer problem you would like to discuss or share with the others? You would be glad to hear that we are forming new Users' Groups during this academic year!

As a service bureau, it is our duty to ensure that our services and facilities are fully utilised by all CityU members, not only to educate on the usage of these services and facilities, but also to stress on their benefits and how they can fit into our users’ requirements. The CSC has taken the first step by inviting technology specialists in their respective fields to give seminars on hot topics. We feel that one of the ways to make people aware of the fast moving technology and to keep it up ourselves is to listen to the experts talk. Here is where CSC Forum comes in. Starting Semester A, you will be showered with topics like Windows 98, Video-on-Demand, Multimedia with Apple’s QuickTime, the latest Pentium II systems and many more. Like always, a seminar will be held every 2 weeks and advertised through the University Message Board, posters distributed to departments and a personal e-mail 2 days before the event actually takes place.

These seminars merely give our users a feel of the current technology trend. However, we need to narrow the scope down by concentrating on the actual services and facilities that the CSC provides. With this in mind, we are also organising a series of free informal Talks in Semester A hoping that the utilisation of the services can be increased for easing staff’s day-to-day work. These talks are scheduled on a biweekly basis and topics may include Using Video-on-Demand in the Lecture Theatres, Putting up Your Personal Home Page in CityU, CityLink Plus for Staff, Proxy Server, FTP Server and many more. Do watch out for the University messages and announcements via e-mail.

Following the success of the Word Processor Users’ Group, we had formed the E-mail Users’ Group and the Windows 95 Users’ Group last year. This year we shall be holding new users’ groups on subjects like MS Office and the Internet. The main objective of these users’ groups is to let group members voice out their problems and share their own knowledge and experiences with the others. Remember this is a give and take community. We believe that the more you share, the more you learn. Since the success of users’ groups depends very much on the participation of CityU staff, we would therefore like to have your support by becoming a member of these groups. When these groups are ready, you will be formally invited via University messages.

Finally, if you have a topic in mind suitable for CSC Forum, Small Talk or Users’ Group, please let us know by dropping an e-mail to ccnetcom@cityu.edu.hk. For queries regarding the seminars and CSC Small Talks, simply call us at ext. 9834.
