What Happened When the Central Internet Machine is Scheduled for Upgrade/Maintenance?

Horizontal Rule [Jun 98]

Mei Ling Lee

Generally speaking, services provided by the Central Internet Machine will be unavailable temporarily. However, what does it really mean to you? Or how does it affect you? Now, let's take the Web server as an example. When the machine is under maintenance, you, like any other Web surfer on the Internet, will still be able to read Web pages on other Web sites but not those residing on the CityU Web server. During this period, you can neither retrieve nor publish your Web pages. Likewise, it is true for the FTP and News servers too.

What if it is the proxy server? Well, first of all, the proxy server does not reside on the Central Internet Machine. As mentioned earlier, the server is running on a separate cluster of computers dedicated to perform its task. Should one of them undergo maintenance, the remaining ones will automatically take over. Consequently, users will not be disturbed. As a reminder, it is strongly advised that users should check that the automatic proxy setting of their browser software is pointed to http://proxy.cityu.edu.hk/proxy/proxy.pac .
