As most of you may need to initiate course planning during the summer months, a list of pre-announced CSC's forthcoming upgrades and improvements is provided below for your information. Each of the following items will be elaborated in the September issue of Network Computing. So, stay tuned!

   Campus Network Upgrade
The entire upgrade exercise is now close to completion. Commencing Semester A, users will be able to enjoy a marked increase in network performance.

   Video-on-Demand
With this new facility in place, users will be able to view a video from the PCs in any lecture theatre within CityU or the designated Student Laboratory areas at any time. Undoubtedly this would be quite appealing to lecturers in this coming Semester.

   Videoconferencing System
The benefits of using videoconferencing facility as a teaching aid have acquired general recognition. To further enhance its quality and reliability, a new system has been installed to enable broader access to this facility on campus. Full coverage will be found in the September issue of Network Computing.

   Internet Broadcasting Facility
This is a facility that will be offered to departments in Semester A for delivering LIVE video broadcast through the campus network or the Internet. Details of which will be covered in the next issue.

Starfire Cluster - Central Intranet Server
Recently, the CSC has put together two extremely powerful UltraSparc Enterprise 10000 servers, popularly known as the Starfire, to form a cluster to provide ample space for all future Intranet developments.

Upgrade of student machines in CSC
By the beginning of Semester A, more than 500 PCs in the CSC terminal area would have been replaced by Pentium II machines with faster configurations. We expect much better teaching facilities and a more secure environment in the months to come.

   Student Work Programme 98
In order to provide additional education opportunity for CityU students, the CSC is offering them a chance to learn about the technology used in the University through practical work in the CSC. Details of which will be covered in the next issue.

   Student Literacy Programme
In addition to the normal registration procedures, departments are encouraged to enrol their new students into these courses. Advice and assistance can be obtained from their CSC representatives.

   Internet Link Upgrade
With the ever-increasing demands from the users, JUCC has planned in the near future that the joint internet link will be further improved to 12 Mbps, doubling the current speed. No doubt this would be good news for all internet users.
