A very warm welcome to all of you. No matter you're busy preparing for your lectures or if you are a newcomer, engaged in getting yourselves familiar in the new environment, you may want to know how advanced we are in the technology field and what the Computing Services Centre (CSC) has in store for you this year and years ahead.

As always, the September issue is filled with vital information on the CSC's recent developments, enhanced services and new technology directions. It is our duty to provide an in-depth look on what is happening in the technology world around us and propose ideas on how we can further improve the computing environment for both CityU staff and students. Take a look at this issue's highlights, you will find the articles "The CityU Intranet" and "CTNET - The New Age" very stimulating indeed.

To coincide with the re-engineering exercise of the university, the CSC has reviewed and made marked improvements on a number of existing services which include the Help Desk (formerly known as the Hot Line Service), the CSC maintenance service, the CityLink Plus service and modernization of lecture theatres within CityU. Details of which can be found from the "New & Improved" column. Under the same column, we also have "Videoconferencing at CityU" together with an article on "New and More Powerful Central Servers". In order to narrow the gap between the CSC and its users, we had established the so-called "CSC Representatives" to serve as a communication channel for departments. For those who are interested in the Smart Card development, the article titled "CitySmart is Smarter Than You Think" is just for you.
