Using the CityU's FTP Server
Annie Yu
Have the following concerns ever crossed your mind?
- I was told that the CSC has the latest virus scan program and some Chinese reading utilities for windows. Where can I get them?
- I discovered some really cool freeware programs over the Internet. I really want to share them with the rest of the CityU community. Is there a quick and convenient way?
- I have a very large file (>2MB) that I want to email to my collaborator, but I don't want to overload the mail server. What shall I do?
Answers:
The answer to 1 is simple. By typing the url http://ftp.cityu.edu.hk/pub/ in any browser program such as Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer, you'll be able to see a descriptive directory of useful tools and utilities. To look inside a desired directory, simply click on the directory name. A list of software will then appear. Now, let's see..., which of these Chinese reading utilities should I download?
The CSC will try its best to keep all the software on the FTP server up-to-date. The table below attempts to give you an idea of what is available on the server:

Latest Virus Scan | /pub/msdos/virus |
Compression Utilities | /pub/msdos/tools |

Now, if you wish to put up certain files on the same FTP server for public downloads, you may do so by following the steps below:
- Email to cc@plink.cityu.edu.hk telling us that you wish to put up file(s) for public access.
- We will then create a temporary FTP directory for you and inform you on the node and path to access it.
- Check to make sure that your files(s) has no copyright problems and is virus-free.
- Upload your file(s) using any network or host FTP tool to that directory.
- To the best of our knowledge, we will try to verify that the file(s) has no copyright problem and is virus free. Then we will put your file(s) in ftp.cityu.edu.hk under the directory /pub/upload. Additionally, a short description about the file(s), of course provided by you, will be put in the readme/index file.
- Anyone interested can then FTP it from /pub/upload.
- The file(s) will be removed at your request or in 3 months.
The next question is how you can make use of this FTP server to transfer your large file to the person at the other end without using email. The following are the steps for putting up files for restricted access:
- Email to cc@plink.cityu.edu.hk telling us that you wish to put up file(s) for restricted access.
- We will then create a temporary FTP directory for you and inform you of the node and path to access it.
- Upload your file(s) using any network or host FTP tool to that directory.
- In this case we will not be responsible for any copyright or virus problems.
- You can then inform your selected contacts on the node, directory, and filenames. They can then FTP from that directory at their convenience.
- Since this FTP directory may be accessible by non-CityU members, for security reasons, it will be valid for 7 calendar days unless otherwise requested.
If you have concerns other than that of the above, do feel free to drop us an email at cc@plink.cityu.edu.hk.
