Dragon Link, a 64Kbps leased data line, is a direct electronic data connection between Hong Kong Academic and Research Network (HARNET) and China Education and Research Network (CERNET). This project was jointly developed by our university and Tsinghua University in China a few years ago. It aims not only to improve data communication and facilitate the exchange of research information among academics in Hong Kong and China, but it also encourages closer ties within the academic community between the two areas. Previously, internet connection from HARNET to China, or vice versa, had to go through U.S. before reaching its destination. The cost of such connection was expensive and inefficient. Hence, there was a need to establish a direct link between the two areas. Two months ago, this milestone came true and it did not come readily. Behind the scene, there was a lot of preparation, feasibility study, demonstration and pilot testing, etc. involved. Staff from both universities had co-operated and worked to overcome difficulties experienced during the process. Now, Dragon Link is here. Go and surf the wealth of information in a faster and more economical way!
