Wonderful News for Express Terminals

Horizontal Rule [MAR 97]

Some of you might have noticed that there have been some changes made on Express Terminals located on both the 2nd and 4th floor within the campus. In fact, these changes represented the first phase of the Express Terminals upgrade which started in the middle of last year. The upgrade process involves both hardware and software upgrades on all Express Terminal PCs as well as the network server.

On the hardware side, all Express Terminal PCs were upgraded from 286/386 CPU to Pentium 133 (or 166) CPU with 16MB memory, while the network server was upgraded to Pentium 166 with 64MB memory. This new configuration is capable of running application software not only in DOS platform, but also in Windows 95 environment which will be implemented in the second phase of the upgrade process.

On the software side, the network operating system (NOS) was upgraded from Pathworks 4 to Pathworks 5 on both the server and the Express Terminal PCs. Hence, the network performance is improved. In addition, a Chinese system, Eten-2000, was installed on the server so that all Express Terminal PCs, after being connected successfully to the network server, are capable of loading Eten-2000 before invoking the campus Information Services. Users can now read and input Chinese characters when accessing any information services such as PolyLink or Inter-Library Catalogues with Express Terminals.
