When email becomes an essential communication means and checking the email box is part of your office routine, you would probably demand more from the email software to meet your needs - user friendliness, reliability, easy mail box management and, most importantly, window-based to let you work with other window applications at the same time.

Now, as the Windows environment is widely available at every University office, the Computing Services Centre (CSC) is glad to introduce a new windows-based email software, Eudora Pro, to you which, as planned, will gradually replace the existing text-based one, viz. Pathworks Mail, to become the new University email standard.

Eudora Pro was carefully selected from a variety of popular email software available on the market upon a most thorough study and testing conducted by the CSC. For details, please read the discussion article on why we chose Eudora Pro in the next issue of Network Computing. The software is now provided on the Information Services Menu under the Windows 95 network environment. (Its network version under Windows 3.1 will be coming soon. Please watch out for our further announcement.) However, you need to have at least the following hardware and software before you can adopt Eudora Pro as your email software:

Processor :80486-33 minimum, Pentium (P5) recommended
Memory :8MB RAM minimum, 16MB recommended
Disk space :50 MB FREE disk space minimum, 100 MB recommended
Video Display :VGA minimum, SuperVGA recommended
Mouse :Microsoft compatible mouse
Operating System :Microsoft Windows 95
Network :Connection to our campus network, CTNET
Email Account :An email account (i.e. a Pathworks / VAX account)

Along with the launch, CSC has published an "Eudora Pro User's Guide" to serve as a quick reference. It is now available for sale at the University Computer Shop while complimentary copies are provided to every departmental office for staff's references.

Free Training for Windows 95 Users

A series of training courses on the new email software has been organized for staff members of the University. Our first round of free training courses consisted of 3 separate runs, scheduled on 24/1/97, 27/1/97 and 29/1/97 respectively. Owing to an overwelming response, another 4 sessions were conducted on 27/2/97, 6/3/97, 13/3/97 and 20/3/97. Depending on the needs, this particular course will be offered repeatedly in the months to come. As seats are limited, applications will be dealt with on a first-come-first-served basis. Only successful applicants will be notified through email. As a pre-requisite, a basic knowledge of Windows 95 is a must.

CSC Small Talk

In addition to the above mentioned formal training, the CSC also saw the need in organizing small talks for all email users including those who have already started using Netscape Mail or Eudora Light, a free version offered on the Internet. A series of small talks titled "Migrating to Eudora Pro under Windows 95" has been specially arranged in an attempt to answer any questions that these email users may have in converting their existing mailboxes to this new email software and to configure it to receive mail thereafter.
