CityLink - 28.8Kbps, the Standard

Horizontal Rule [MAR 97]

Angela Tang

On the 7th and 8th of January, all 14.4Kbps modems of the CityLink service were upgraded to 28.8Kbps. Since then, no matter which CityLink phone number you dial to connect the service, the same user interface will be displayed once a connection is established.

However, to be able to communicate in 28.8Kbps, your modem must support the V.34 communication standard and your PC's COM port need to contain a 16550 UART chip. For details on the configuration of hardware/software, please refer to the message "Using 28.8K CityLink Modem Pool" in PolyLink's Bulletin Board #000 - CSC Facilities & Services.

Express Line

To improve the flexibility of the CityLink service, an Express Line has been established for users who only need a short connection period. The Express Line offers 30 minutes connection time during peak hours: 19:00 - 02:00 Monday to Friday, all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (see also on Key Services and Information). While the CSC continues to improve the service, users' co-operation is also very important for better utilization of the resources. CityLink users are recommended to disconnect their calls once the work is completed and avoid typing/editing large files on-line. When using the Express Line to edit a file, one must remember to save the changes as often as possible before the 30 minutes timer expires.
