A few words from the editor...

 

Welcome readers! After being dormant for a long period of time, we are pleased to announce the rebirth of Network Computing, a newsletter of the Computer Centre.

Just to refresh your memory on the purpose of this newsletter. Well, as a service department, we have a number of goals and objectives to achieve. One of them is to satisfy users' needs, and the other is to promote new computer technology. In order to provide a foundation for the mutual understanding between the Centre and its users, and to introduce new computer technology, a channel needs to be established. One way of doing so is via Network Computing. It is hoped that through this mode of communication, both staff and students of the Polytechnic, as well as those from other institutions will have a better picture of the Computer Centre's current activities and its future directions.

As this is the first of our series of issues, we have an urge to tell the world about everything we have accomplished in the past few years, so we may have a tendency to overload this first issue. To avoid this from happening, we have chosen selected topics such as new development of our Centre's facilities in 94/95 to start with, followed by an update of the Campus Network (CPNET). Special emphasis will be placed on this issue's attraction - A description of the Information Services Section and the services it provides. News on such matters as new software installations, announcements, Centre's activities review, user training programmes as well as documentation will also be mentioned.

In our subsequent issues, we shall continue to bring you the most up-to-date news about the Computer Centre as well as standalone articles of interesting topics. The goodies are yet to come, so do stay tuned!!!
