IT Services supported by CSC can be classified into three categories, namely electronic applications, network connection and physical access.
Electronic applications services include Email, e-Portal / e-Learning and AIMS. All services can be accessed via Web interface from the local campus network or from the Internet. A computer account will be created in each of the corresponding application services to contain the user profile for using these services. These computer accounts will take up the users Electronic ID (EID) as user name and the password will be authenticated by the LDAP service. Therefore, the password for accessing all electronic application services with the same EID will be the same.
Users need to make connection to the campus network in order to access the electronic applications described above. There are several methods to connect to the campus network, i.e. using PCs connected to the Staff LAN / Student LAN, or using notebook through the Wireless LAN (WLAN). Corresponding computer accounts are created for eligible users for them to make the network connection. These network connection accounts share the same password for a particular user. Users may also connect to the campus network from home using broadband. In order to protect the data passing through the connection, a VPN account is provided for users to make VPN access such that all data passing through the connection is encrypted.
Services provided face to face belong to this category. Student Computer Literacy Courses are organised regularly throughout the year. Users can also use the PCs and printers in the CSC terminal rooms, students can borrow notebook computers at the Student Notebook Computer Daily Loan Scheme. All of these services are classified under the physical access category.
(LDAP is a service for authenticating the access of electronic application services including Email, e-Portal/e-Learning and AIMS.)
