Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection Setup Guide for Windows 98

This manual shows the procedures to set up a CityU VPN Client running on Windows 98. You should have the following items before you can establish a VPN connection.

  • Internet connection such as your broadband or dial-up network
  • Microsoft DUN 1.4 or later if you are using dial-up network. You can download it from the Microsoft web site. Make sure you get the correct version for your Microsoft Windows.
  • LAN Manager (Departmental LAN or CSC Student LAN) account and Password

Step 1: Establish your Internet Connection

1.  Since you will be using a public Internet connection to establish the CityU VPN connection, you must first apply for your own Internet connection (such as broadband, dial-up, etc.).

2.  Follow the instructions provided by your ISP to setup your Internet connection. You may need to purchase and install a network interface card or modem in order to connect to the Internet.

3.  Check your Internet connection by logging in with your ISP account. If you cannot access the Internet or having problems in setting your Internet connection, please consult your ISP.

Step 2: Setup the Virtual Private Network Adapter

1.  Click "Start" button on the task bar and then choose "Settings" -> "Control Panel" from the start menu.

2.  Double click the "Network" icon to open the "Network" window.

3. Double click the "Client for Microsoft Networks" of the network components list box.

Make sure the Windows NT domain text box is blank or you may have trouble in logging in our system. Click the "OK" button to go back to the "Network" window shown above.

4. Click the "Add" button in the "Network" window to add network component.

5. Highlight the "Adapter" from the list and then click "Add" button.

6. Select "Microsoft" from the manufacturers list and choose "Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter" from the network adapters list.

7. Press "OK" button to add the VPN adapter to your network configuration.

8. Make sure the Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter is added. Otherwise, you will need to repeat step 4 to step 7 again.

9. Press "OK" to complete adding VPN adapter. You may be asked to reboot your PC to make new settings effective. Press "Yes" to reboot if you are told to do so.

Step 3: Setup CityU VPN Service

1.  From the "Start" menu, select "Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "Communications" -> "Dial-Up Networking" to open the "Dial-up Networking" window.

2. Double click on the "Make New Connection" icon.

3. You will be ask for the name of the system you are dialing and the device to be used. You can enter "CityU VPN" for the name and select "Microsoft VPN Adapter" for the device.

4. Press "Next" to continue and enter "vpn.cityu.edu.hk" for the name of the VPN Server.

5.Press "Next" and then "Finish" to save the VPN client settings.

6. You will see a new "CityU VPN" icon created on the Dial-up Networking window. You may create a shortcut to the desktop for quick access in the future.

7. The VPN Client setup is now completed. You may now close all unwanted windows.

Step 4: Establish CityU VPN Connection

1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet before trying to establish CityU VPN connection.

2. Double click the "City VPN" icon to establish the connection.

3. Enter the LAN Manager user name and password to logon the CityU VPN.

4. Upon successful logon, a connection icon will be shown on the system tray and you can now access hosts inside CityU securely through public Internet connection.

Close the CityU VPN connection

If you want to close the CityU VPN connection, you can double click the "City VPN" icon again and then press the disconnect button to close the connection.
