To setup your network connection in Windows XP

This guide describes how to setup a network connection in CityU student residence in Windows XP environment.

Before installing any network components, make sure that you have the following items, as they will be required during installation:

  • Windows XP installed in the computer
  • Windows XP CD-ROM that comes along with the notebook computer
  • Network Interface Card

Step 1: Network Card Installation

  1. If your computer has build-in network card, please skip this step and proceed to Step 2.
  2. Insert the network card into the computer.
  3. Power on the computer and Windows XP will detect the card automatically.
  4. Windows XP will prompt you to install the driver.

Step 2: Configuring TCP/IP

  1. Click "Start" from the menu bar, choose "Connect to" and then "Show all connections" from the menu.
  2. Right-click the "Local area connection" icon and choose the "Properties" option from the pop-up menu.
  3. Make sure that name of the network card chosen is the network card you use.
  4. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click the "Properties" button.
  5. Make sure the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" options are selected.
  6. Click the "Advanced" button to clear setting of gateways and Wins server previously used, if any.
  7. Click the "OK" button to save the settings.
  8. Reboot the computer.

Step 3: Renewing IP address

  1. Click "Start" on the Windows menu bar and then choose "Programs", "Accessories" and "Command Prompt" from the menu to invoke the command prompt.
  2. Alternatively, click"Start" on the Windows menu bar, choose "Programs", and type "cmd" and press the "OK" button.
  3. In the pop-up window, type "ipconfig /renew" and press Enter.
  4. Type "exit" to close the window.
