| Information Day 2006
CityU will hold its Information Day on 14 October to introduce to prospective
students the academic programmes and learning facilities at the University.
The theme of the Information Day this year is "From Student to Professional",
which highlights the commitment of CityU to helping young people transform
into well educated professionals.
In addition to exhibitions, talks, and guided tours to
laboratories, the Information Day 2006 will organize for the first time
a series of seminars for parents on how to guide their children towards
university education. During the seminars, CityU professors and community
celebrities will be invited to share their experience on topics such as
financial management and provide guidance to their children on personal
as well as career development.

| Student Residence Hall
named after Dr Lee Shau-kee
CityU named Student Residence Hall 6 after Dr
Lee Shau-kee, Chairman and Managing Director of Henderson Land
Group, at a ceremony on 12 September in appreciation of Dr Lee's contribution
to the development of CityU and the education sector. As a prominent entrepreneur
and philanthropist, Dr Lee's visionary business leadership has been widely
recognized and he has been awarded honorary doctorates and honorary fellowships
by various local and overseas universities.
Lee Shau-kee Hall, first used as students' residence in
June 2004, houses some 350 students. The Hall established its hall-based
scholarships in 2004–05, the first among all CityU's student residences.

| Prestigious Recognition
Professor H K Chang, University President,
was conferred Honorary Professor by Peking University in recognition of
his extensive contributions to higher education. Professor Chang received
the conferment from Professor Xu Zhihong, President of
Peking University, on 6 September. In his note of thanks, Professor Chang
said the conferment was not only an honour to himself but also a recognition
of CityU's achievements and its long-standing collaboration with Peking
University.

| Kudos
A paper on tropical storms by Professor (Chair)
Johnny Chan Chung-leung of the Department of Physics and Materials
Science has broken into the top 20 of the most cited papers under the
special topic of Tropical Storms in a list compiled by Essential Science
Indicators (ESI). This is the first time a CityU academic has made
the ESI special topics top 20 list. ESI is a resource operated by the
Thomson Corporation that enables researchers to conduct ongoing, quantitative
analyses of research performance and track trends in science. The data
are used by various groups in compiling performance league tables for
higher education. Professor Chan's paper, entitled "Global warming
and western North Pacific typhoon activity from an observational perspective",
was published in the Journal of Climate in 2004.
Mr Zeng Jia, a doctoral
student at CityU's School of Creative Meda, has won second prize in the
Postgraduate Section of the IEEE Region 10 Student Paper Contest 2006
with his research paper entitled "Markhov Random Fields-based Statistical
Structure Modeling for Chinese Character Recognition", under the
supervision of Professor Liu Zhi-qiang.
IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers. Region 10, which is sometimes referred to as
the Asia Pacific Region, is one of the largest regions worldwide of the
professional body. It covers a geographical area stretching from South
Korea and Japan in the northeast to New Zealand in the south, and Pakistan
in the west.
Ms Xing Jing, a
graduate of the MSc in applied economics programme in the Department of
Economics and Finance, has been awarded a Wei Lun Scholarship to pursue
an MPhil at Oxford University.

| Distinguished Industrialist
Lecture
The Faculty of Science and Engineering will host a
Distinguished Industrialist Lecture by Mr Senta Wong,
Chairman and CEO of Wong's Kong King International (Holdings) Ltd., on
the topic of "electronic industry and OEM". The lecture will
take place at 4 pm, 29 September, at Wei Hing Theatre. Mr Wong has over
40 years of experience in the field.

| Annual Aquatic Meet
The 16th CityU Annual Aquatic Meet, jointly organized
by the Student Development Serives and Students' Union, will be held on
the afternoon of 30 September (Saturday). All students, full-time staff
and their immediate family members are welcome to participate.

| Dress Special Day
Staff and students are invited to take part in Dress
Special Day (formerly called Dress Casual Day) on 29 September. This year,
all participants can dress down, dress up, dress special or dress "colour".
All donations raised will be allocated to supporting the Family and Child
Welfare Services under the Community Chest Umbrella. In addition to making
donations through their general office, all staff and students can show
their support by contributing to the Dress Special Day donation boxes
located at Cut Price Shop, Photocopying Centre (4/F, Amenities Building)
and Student Union counter from 26 to 27 September.
