Year of the Horse
The staff party for ushering in the Year of the Horse will take place on 7 February. Organised by the Human Resources Office, the event will feature a buffet lunch, stalls with Chinese handicrafts and a series of celebratory events.

 

30th Anniversary Student Programmes
As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations to promote students¡¦ concern on community needs and issues, the University has initiated a series of community services and engagement projects for staff and students aimed at cultivating a caring environment, meeting identified community needs, and advocating humanistic values and social awareness. Projects that are innovative and can create a long-lasting social impact on society will be granted a funding support up to $18,000 per project. For more details, please click here.

 

New appointment
Professor Geraint Howells will assume the position of Chair Professor of Commercial Law in the School of Law and concurrently as Dean of the School of Law on 1 August 2014. Professor Howells is currently Head of the Law School at Manchester University and formerly was President of the International Association of Consumer Law. He previously held chairs at the University of Sheffield and Lancaster University.

 

Vet School
The Senate at its meeting on 12 January 2010 decided to endorse the establishment of the School of Veterinary Medicine in the triennium 2012¡V2015. At the Senate meeting held on 14 January 2014, the Senate, with 79 members attending out of a total membership of 113, unanimously approved the University¡¦s plan to proceed with establishing the School of Veterinary Medicine. It will offer initially postgraduate degree programmes in Veterinary Medicine. The University¡¦s partner in this project, Cornell University, affirmed its support for this plan through its Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine.

 

Exhibition
The Chinese Civilisation Centre is organising an exhibition titled Hainan Scenery: Joint Exhibition of Chen Yan & Song Limin at the Singing Waves Gallery from 25 January until 9 March.

 

Kudos
The China Building—2013 National Environmental Design Competition was held in December 2013 and attracted thousands of entries from all provinces of China. The work titled ¡§Renovation of City University of Hong Kong Library¡¨ won the merit award in the category of ¡§Landscape design, professional group¡¨. The design highlights the permeation of daylight and landscape in the library environment. The work was designed by Dr Charlie Xue Qiuli, Associate Professor in the Division of Building Science and Technology, his research assistant Ms Yang Ke, and his PhD student Zang Peng, who is based in the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering.

Zhao Yue, a 2013 graduate from the BEng (Hons) in Electronic and Communication Engineering, won the IEEE Hong Kong Section 2013 (Undergraduate) Student Paper Contest with a paper titled ¡§A Novel Broadband Dual-Polarized Antenna for 3G and 4G¡¨ under the supervision of Professor Luk Kwai-Man, Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering in the Department of Electronic Engineering.
