Naming ceremony
A lecture theatre at the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre will be named the Shun Hing Lecture Theatre in appreciation of the support and generous donation to the University by Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund. A naming ceremony will be held on 8 May. Mr David Mong Tak-yeung, Chairman of the Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund, Mr David Sun Tak-kei, Council Chairman, and Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, will officiate at the ceremony.

 

GARC forum, conference
A forum held by the Governance in Asia Research Centre (GARC) will focus on regional collaborations on the future development, challenges and opportunities in four key industries: law, finance and logistics, creative industry and social services. The forum is titled "Achieving Mutual Gains in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Collaboration: Qianhai, Hengqin and Beyond" and will take place on 25 May. On 26 May, administrative, governance and social reform in the region will be the focus of a GARC conference titled "Administrative Reform in Guangdong: Shunde and Beyond" jointly organised with Sun Yat-sen University.

 

Chinese senior judges
Thirty-three senior judges from 29 provinces from mainland China will participate in the 5th Advanced Programme for Chinese Senior Judges from 3–17 May. Mr Chen Haiguang, Vice-President of National Judges College; Mr Feng Wei, Director-General, Department of Law, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; and Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, will attend the opening ceremony on 4 May.

 

Science & engineering exhibition
Project posters and product demonstrations put together by students from the College of Science and Engineering will promote the students' vitality and enthusiasm for technological investigations at the Student Project Exhibition organised by the College on 31 May and 1 June.

 

Appointments
Professor Ray Forrest will take over as Head of the Department of Public and Social Administration from 27 August 2012. Professor Forrest joined the University in September 2008.

Professor Istvan Horvath has been re-appointed as Head of the Department of Biology and Chemistry for a second term of office, from 1 August 2012 to 31 July 2015.

 

CityU sports
CityU's sports teams won the championship title in seven events, the 1st runner-up position in eight events, and the 2nd runner-up position in seven events in the 2011–2012 Inter-Collegiate Competitions. The women's teams secured the Overall Champion title and the men's teams were Overall Second out of the ten tertiary institutions participating in the competition. The Annual Prize Presentation Ceremony of the University Sports Federation of Hong Kong, China (USFHK) took place on 29 April.

 

Kudos
Electronic engineering PhD students Zhao Mingbo and Zhang Zhao, supervised by Professor Tommy Chow Wai-shing of the Department of Electronic Engineering, have won the Third Prize in the 2012 IEEE Hong Kong Section (Postgraduate) Student Paper Contest with a paper titled "ITR-Score Algorithm: an Efficient Trace Ratio Criterion based Algorithm for Supervised Dimensionality Reduction".

Dr Jung Chan-su, Assistant Professor in the Department of Public and Social Administration, has received the June Pallot Award for his paper "Organisational Goal Ambiguity and Performance: Conceptualisation, Measurement, and Relationships" published in the International Public Management Journal (IPMJ). The International Public Management Network created the June Pallot Award for the best article published annually in the IPMJ with an emphasis on public sector accounting, accountability and finance after the death of Ms June Pallot, associate editor of IPMJ, in 2004.

The paper titled "Imitating the West? Evidence on Administrative Reform from the Upper Echelons of Chinese Provincial Government" co-authored by Professor Tom Christensen, Professor Martin Painter and Professor Richard Walker, Adjunct Professor, Chair Professor and Professor of the Department of Public and Social Administration, respectively, and Professor Dong Lisheng of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, has been selected as the 2012 recipient of the Pierre de Celles Award. The award is given to the authors of the best paper presented at the International Association of Schools and Institutes of Administration 2011 Annual Conference.
