Science academy
Chair Professor Philippe G Ciarlet from the Department of Mathematics has been elected a foreign member of the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in recognition of his contribution to developing and utilising mathematical tools to solve critical issues in mechanics and modern engineering, as well as promoting mathematics in China.

 

Nanoelectronics conference
CityU is hosting the prestigious "IEEE International NanoElectronics Conference" from 3-8 January 2010 as part of its commitment to advancing science and technology for betterment of Hong Kong and the wider global community. This event will bring together many world-class speakers and experts, including Nobel Laureate Professor Sir Harold Kroto, Executive Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Professor Bai Chun-li, and more than 20 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Academia Sinica to discuss the extensive research and profound implications of nanoscience and nanotechnology on the health, electronics, biomedical, and photonics industries.

 

Distinguished Scholar Lecture
Renowned scholar Professor Lin Yu-sheng will be the guest speaker of a CityU 25th Anniversary Distinguished Scholar Lecture, where he will discuss the "Theoretical Foundations of Academic Freedom and Its Practical Implications" on 19 December, 2:30pm, at Lecture Theatre 4 in the Academic Building of CityU.

 

Senior appointment
Professor Bin Srinidhi has been appointed Chair Professor of Accountancy in the Department of Accountancy. Professor Srinidhi is an outstanding academic scholar and researcher, with an impressive publication record in the areas of Management Accounting, Operations and Quality Management, Auditing, Information Security and Capital Markets. He also serves on the editorial boards of leading accounting journals.

 

SEARC workshop
The Southeast Asia Research Centre (SEARC) jointly organised with the Hiroshima Peace Institute of Japan and Asian Political and International Studies Association of Malaysia the international workshop "State Violence and Political Transition in East Asia" from 9-11 December. Dr Kyaw Yin Hlaing, Assistant Professor of Department of Asian and International Studies, represented SEARC and led the workshop.

 

Visiting Scholar appointed to UN post
Ms Farida Shaheed, a Visiting Scholar of CityU and Acting Director of the Research Programme Consortium "Women's Empowerment in Muslim Contexts" based at the Southeast Asia Research Centre, has been appointed independent expert in the field of cultural rights by the United Nations Human Rights Council and has recently assumed her functions. She is a Pakistani sociologist and also serves as the Director of Research in Shirkat Gah – Women's Resource Centre in Pakistan.
