Typhoon appeal 
The devastating Typhoon Morakot struck Taiwan and caused tremendous destruction to the island. To support the affected people for emergency relief and rehabilitation, the University appeals to its staff, students and alumni to make donations through direct bank-in to CityU’s bank account at Hang Seng Bank (account number: 024-293-1-187708) by 15 September 2009. The funds will be passed to Chung Hwa Travel Service, the official Taiwan representative office in Hong Kong, to help the victims rebuild their homes.

 

Research Excellence Awards 
The CityU Research Excellence Awards 2009 has been concluded successfully. After thorough deliberation, the Judging Panel comprising both internal and external experts and professionals unanimously decided to grant the Grand Award to Professor Yang Tong, Chair Professor of Mathematics; the Award of Excellence to Professor Leung Kwok, Chair Professor of Management; and the Certificate of Merit to Professor Cheng Sheung-tak of the Department of Applied Social Studies. The awards will be presented at the University Congregation in November 2009.

 

New School Dean
Professor Jeffrey Shaw has been appointed Chair Professor of Creative Art and concurrently as Dean of School of Creative Media, effective 24 August. Professor Shaw has been an internationally leading figure in new media art. In a prolific oeuvre of widely exhibited and critically acclaimed work he has pioneered and set benchmarks for the creative use of digital media technologies in the fields of virtual and augmented reality, immersive visualisation environments, navigable cinematic systems and interactive narrative. Professor Shaw was the founding Director of the ZKM Institute for Visual Media Karlsruhe in Germany. Since then he has cofounded and directed the iCinema Centre for Interactive Cinema Research at the University of New South Wales, Australia.

 

Senior appointment
Professor David John Randall has rejoined the University as Chair Professor of Biology. A world renowned scientist in fish physiology, Professor Randall had a distinguished career at the University of British Columbia in Canada before he served as Head of Department of Biology and Chemistry at CityU from 2000 to 2006.

 

New CityU homepage
An exciting new-look homepage for CityU was launched on 12 August, improving internal and external communications channels and projecting a more vibrant and contemporary image of the University. The new homepage provides a link to its new-media platform, CityUtube. The University will upload and update video clippings to CityUtube to provide viewers with an interactive glimpse of the University, its community and achievements.

 

New students welcomed
CityU has organised a series of orientation activities to welcome the new Year 1 students and help them familiarise with their new university life. One of the key events, the University Welcoming Ceremony, will be held from 24 to 26 August at Chan Tai Ho Multi-purpose Hall. Students from different colleges and schools will meet Professor Way Kuo, CityU President, teachers and representatives of the Students' Union and Convocation.

 

Public administration conference
The Department of Public and Social Administration is holding the 5th Cross-Strait Conference on Public Administration. The 20-21 August conference will address the theme ˇ§Public Administration in a Changing World: Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovationsˇ¨. The opening ceremony will take place in the Multimedia Conference Room from 9.30am.

 

Kudos
A paper entitled Milk Care: A Tripartite Model for Sustainable Development of Chinese Milk Industry has earned a Distinguished Paper Award at the 2009 Annual General Meeting and Milk Industry Forum organised by the Dairy Association of China. It was written by Du Tingting, Year 3 student of the Department of Marketing, Kung Suen-cheong, new graduate of the Department of Electronic Engineering, and Zhuang Xiaomeng, Year 3 student of the Department of Economics and Finance. The paper was also published on The Time Weekly and milk industry websites in China.
