Honorary awards
CityU will confer honorary doctoral degrees on Dr Simon Ip Sik-on, Professor Justin Lin Yifu, Professor Susumu Tonegawa, Professor Wong Chi-huey and Professor Zhang Jie in recognition of their significant contribution to education and the well-being of society. The award ceremony will be held on 10 November 2009 during the University’s Congregation.

Dr Simon Ip, solicitor and Notary Public, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws. The World Bank’s Chief Economist and Senior Vice President Professor Justin Lin will receive an Honorary Doctor of Social Science. Japanese scientist and Nobel Prize winner Professor Susumu Tonegawa, President of the Academia Sinica, Taiwan, Professor Wong Chi-huey, and President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University Professor Zhang Jie, will receive Honorary Doctors of Science.

 

SEE acting dean
Professor Johnny Chan Chung-leung of the Department of Physics and Materials Science has been appointed Acting Dean of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE). The School is committed to improve environmental quality and support sustainable development in Greater China and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole. It aspires to be one of the leading schools in the region, specialising in professional education and cutting-edge research in energy and environment.

 

Senior Appointments
Ms Ada Leung Wing-yee has been appointed Associate Vice-President (Development) of the University. Ms Leung will assume duty on 27 July. Ms Leung has extensive experience in development work, marketing, public relations, event management and client servicing. Before joining CityU, she was the Acting Director of the Alumni Affairs and Development Office of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Prior to that, Ms Leung was the Community Relations Manager of the Mon Sheong Foundation, Toronto, Canada, for more than ten years.

The following staff members have been promoted to the position of Chair Professor in the 2008-09 Promotion Exercises, with effect from 1 September 2009: Professor Man Kim-fung and Professor Keith Zhang Qitu, Department of Electronic Engineering; Professor Zhou Dingxuan, Department of Mathematics, and Professor Gary Feng Gang, Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management.

Professor Tsui Kwok-leung is the newly appointed Chair Professor of Industrial Engineering in the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Engineering Management.

 

External Appointments
Dr Alice Chong Ming-lin, Associate Professor, Department of Applied Social Studies and Mr Murali Mohan Narasipuram, Associate Professor, Department of Information Systems were appointed Members of Public Affairs Forum of HKSAR Home Affairs Bureau for two years from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2011. The Forum was set up in 2005 to provide a new consultation channel and facilitate the participation of the middle class in the public affairs of Hong Kong.

 

Book Fair
City University of Hong Kong Press is participating in the Hong Kong Book Fair 2009 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wanchai. More than 110 CityU Press publications at discount prices will be on display from 22 to 28 July. Visit at Booth 1D16-19, 21, University Press Square, Exhibition Hall 1.

 

Science and Engineering Fun Days
The College of Science and Engineering will host "The Science and Engineering Fun Days" from 22 to 24 July. The activities are specially designed for senior secondary school students to learn how modern technology affects our daily lives. It aims to introduce practical and interesting facets of scientific knowledge through laboratory tours and experiments. In addition, the activities provide students with an understanding of CityU.
