Honorary Awards 2019

We will confer honorary degrees on two persons this year in recognition of their significant contributions to education and the well-being of society. They are Professor Michael I. Kotlikoff and Dr the Honourable Edward Leong Che-hung, GBM, GBS, OBE, JP. The honorary awards ceremony will be held in November.



Appointments

Professor Richard Walker, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Public Policy, has been appointed Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences from 1 August 2019. Professor Walker received his PhD from the University of Reading, UK. He joined CityU in 2011 and is a distinguished scholar in the performance of public organisations, innovation and strategic management.

Professor Kuo Tei Wei has been appointed Dean of the College of Engineering. He will also serve as an Advisor to President (Information Technology). He joined CityU on 1 August 2019.



10th anniversary for CityU Elder Academy

The CityU Elder Academy will be holding its 10th anniversary celebration ceremony on 22 August. With the generous support from the Elderly Commission, nearly 750 elderly students so far have completed CityU courses as auditing students.



MoU with Pengcheng Lab

CityU has signed an MoU with Pengcheng Lab (PCL), a body approved by the Guangdong Provincial Government and established by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, with the mayor of Shenzhen as the Chair of the Board of Directors. The MoU was signed by Professor Lu Jian, CityU's Vice-President (Research and Technology), and Professor Gao Wen, Director of PCL. Under the MoU, both parties will cooperate on research of computer science and information science.



Kudos

Several members of the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) were honoured by the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society at the 2019 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation, and USNC-URSI Radio Science Meeting from 7 to 12 July in Atlanta, US. PhD student Ding Chen, supervised by Professor Luk Kwai-man, Chair Professor in EE, won the 2019 First Prize Student Paper Award for a paper entitled "Wideband Omnidirectional Circularly Polarized Antenna for Millimeter-Wave Applications Using Printed Artificial Anisotropic Polarizer".

Dr Steve Wong Hang, Associate Professor in EE, was named Outstanding Reviewer of IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation.

A CityU team from the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, comprising Dr So Kwok-kan (PhD graduate, 2005), Dr Chan Ka-fai (PhD graduate, 2007), Dr Keeson Shum Kam-man (PhD graduate, 2007) and Dr Wang Kaixu (PhD graduate, 2019), were placed 3rd in the IEEE AP and MTT Hong Kong Joint Chapter - IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Outstanding Chapter Awards.

Dr Lin Wei, a PhD graduate in 2016 supervised by Dr Steve Wong, won the Raj Mittra Travel Grant Award. The selection is based upon the candidate's potential or demonstrated aptitude for research.

Meanwhile, Chui Chi-ho, a final year BSc Computer Science student, won the First Runner-up in the Young Professionals Exhibition & Competition 2019 organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Third Prize in the 5th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition 2019 organised by Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association, under the supervision of Dr Raymond Wong Hau-san, Associate Head of the Department of Computer Science. Chi-ho’s award-winning project, Navigation System for Visually Impaired Pedestrians, combines machine learning, computer vision and indoor positioning techniques to address daily problems encountered by the visually impaired in the absence of barrier-free facilities.
