Project Period

21/4/06 - 20/10/07

The project aims to develop advanced materials and technologies for OLED, and provide trained OLED professionals to companies in Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta (PRD).

The project will focus on: (i) demonstration of high-efficiency white-emitting OLED for general lighting and backlight purposes; (ii) developments of flexible OLED, including the development of low-cost materials technologies and low-temperature processing/manufacturing technologies for dot-matrix flexible OLED; (iii) development of nanostructural thin films for packaging of flexible OLED; (iv) development of high-efficiency and low-cost OLED materials and the corresponding device technologies for OLED industries in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. Within the project period, an OLED training workshop will be provided for interested industries.

The team at City University of HK (CityU) has an outstanding track record in the field of OLED and is equipped with a comprehensive set of OLED infrastructure and facilities. The proposed project will buttress the infrastructure and technology base in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. It is also expected that the cost-effective platform established in this project will provide timely needed, well-trained technical personnel and professionals to OLED industries in Hong Kong and PRD.

Scope of the project

CityU will utilize the existing R&D facilities (5 OLED R&D deposition systems, 1 OLED fabrication pilot-line, and comprehensive and advanced analytical and testing equipments) to develop advanced OLED materials and technologies and provide a training workshop to display industry. The proposed project has the following objectives:

(1)        To develop advanced and new OLED materials and processing technologies for the improvement of OLED’s color purity, environmental stability, operation lifetime,   efficiency and production yield.

(2)        To develop flexible OLED including the development and incorporation of advanced thin film encapsulation and low-temperature deposition of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode with proper conductivity.

(3)        To develop novel OLED technologies and products to enable the technology upgrade of display and optoelectronics industries in Hong Kong and PRD and hence a new opportunity in display markets. Two of the representative products include high-efficiency white-emitting OLED for general lighting purpose and dot-matrix flexible OLED display

(4)        To facilitate the development of the OLED industries in Hong Kong and PRD, to buttress their infrastructure and technology base, and to enhance their competitiveness in high-tech-based industry in Guangdong region.

(5)        To develop reliable and cost-effective synthesis of functional materials, and the relevant materials technology in two complementary categories: (i) high-efficiency and long-lifetime organic charge transport and emissive materials; (ii) hybrid functional materials including nano inorganic/organic composites for high-performance OLED.

(6)        To provide timely, needed, well-trained technical personnel and professionals to OLED industries in Hong Kong and PRD.
