Ms Wisteria Cheung Yuen-yi
Instructor, Department of Marketing
Since joining CityU in 2000, Ms Cheung has introduced
many innovative teaching and learning ideas onto different marketing
courses. Using her experience from over 10 years in human resources
management and customer service, she links classroom learning to
the real-life business environment.
Ms Cheung helps students thoroughly understand
the principles behind handling customer complaints through role-play
activities, which are based on her experiences in the workplace.
She also holds career orientation activities for final-year students
and acts as their career counselor, helping them adjust to their
professional life after graduation.
In addition, through her extensive network of contacts
in the industry, she has invited business leaders to share their
experience with students. She has organized workshops and camps
to help students better understand their career goals and job prospects,
as well as learn how to write job application letters and prepare
for effective job interviews.
Ms Julia Han Ji-yeon
Instructor, Department of Chinese, Translation and Linguistics
Ms Han joined CityU in 2001 and has been the programme
coordinator for Korean Studies in the Department of Chinese, Translation
and Linguistics since 2003. Since then, she has launched a Minor
in Korean Studies programme as well as seven courses in Korean language
and culture.
In her teaching, Ms Han creates an authentic and
motivating language learning environment for students, making use
of the Universityˇ¦s e-learning platform, Blackboard Academic Suite,
to provide interactive learning materials that students use to learn
the Korean alphabet, vocabulary and sentence structures.
To provide students with opportunities to apply
what they have learnt in class, she collaborated in 2004 with the
Consulate General of the Republic of Korea and the Korean Chamber
of Commerce to organize CityUˇ¦s first summer internship programmes
for students studying Korean. Seven Korean companies are involved,
including Samsung and LG Electronics. She has also contributed to
promoting cultural exchanges between Hong Kong and the Republic
of Korea by producing and co-hosting a Korean language radio programme
ˇ§Lets go Koreaˇ¨ with the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea
and RTHK.
Dr Ron Kwok Chi-wai
Assistant Professor, Department of Information Systems
Dr Kwok received his PhD from the Department of
Information Systems at CityU and worked at the University from 1998
to 2000 and from 2002 to present. He is concurrently the course
leader for Year One courses and he helps develop and promote the
PDA Learning Programme, hoping to boost interaction and learning
effectiveness in large lecture classes through the use of PDAs.
As a CityU alumnus and having worked as a primary
and secondary school teacher for five years, Dr Kwok understands
the problems faced by Year 1 students when they start their undergraduate
programmes. To design the most appropriate teaching approach, he
consults over 40 colleagues teaching Year 1 courses in the Faculty
of Business, and, to get to know his students better, he memorizes
the names and personal details of several hundred Year 1 students
every year, regularly making time to chat with them after class.
Dr Sun Hongyi
Associate Professor, Department of Manufacturing Engineering and
Engineering Management
Dr Sun was born in Harbin where he received his
masterˇ¦s degree. He worked as a post-doctoral fellow in Denmark
where he completed his PhD degree before teaching at a university
in Norway for several years. He joined CityU in 1998. He has studied
in two different education systems, that of China and Europe, and
he has combined the strengths of both to help develop a series of
engineering courses at CityU over the past few years. The courses
aim to inspire creative thinking and are very well received by students.
In one of his courses, students are required to
spend one semester developing a workable engineering design within
a specified budget. This task encourages students to work closely
and learn actively. To further boost interest and motivation, Dr
Sun uses his own teaching notes, which can run to over 1,000 pages,
instead of using a textbook. In addition, he determines to make
sure his lectures are lively and stimulating.
