Student Exchange Scholarships for Outbound Exchange Students


The Department of Media and Communication (COM) has agreed to establish scholarships in the University with its Non-UGC Reserves with effect from the academic year 2008/09. The following regulations shall apply from 2012/2013 to 2015/2016:
The Scholarships shall be known as ‘Department of Media and Communication Student Exchange Scholarships for Outbound Exchange Students’.
The number of awards will not be fixed and the total value of the scholarships will be a maximum of HK$600,000. The value of each Scholarship shall vary, depending on the destination. The Scholarship shall cover up to 50% of the total costs for a recipient’s return economy class airfare, accommodation, living and incidental expenses for one semester only. Details are as follows:

The scholarship recipients should:
be COM full-time non-UGC funded and/or non-local students who have been selected by the University to participate in the University’s/ College’s/ Department’s exchange programme and are officially accepted by overseas partner institutions to take part in the exchange programme for at least one semester;
be regular students of the University’s bachelor’s degree programmes and have completed at least one year full-time study in a bachelor’s degree programme before commencing the exchange programme;
have attained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.0 or above in the last semester/term of study, and a minimum TOEFL score of 213 (computer-based), or IELTS Band 6.5 or above, or any other language requirements as specified for individual exchange programmes; and
contribute to Department of Media and Communication and City University of Hong Kong in promoting exchange programmes;
Payment of 80% of the scholarship value shall be arranged when the recipients have settled their tuition fees and other study related fees of the same academic year before they set off to the designated universities. In case of non-UGC funded students, they should pay the amount which is equivalent to the minimum credit units charged for a full-time student (i.e. 12 credit units per semester). As soon as the notification from the Department reaches SDS, SDS will inform Finance Office to effect the payment. Upon the completion of the student exchange programme, recipients should submit the transcript to the Department of Media and Communication for reimbursement of the remaining 20% of the approved scholarship within two months after their return to Hong Kong.
The nominations will be made by a Selection Panel as designated by the Head of Department of Media and Communication.
Nominations from the Department will be submitted to SDS when the selection exercise is completed by April and October of each year.
The University reserves the right to demand the partial/full refund of the scholarship from the recipient should s/he fail to complete the exchange programme.
It will be assumed that the Scholarships shall be offered annually until further notice in writing by the Department before 1 July of each year.
With an objective to nurture our students and to promote caring culture, the Community Relations Committee of the University Council has recommended that each award recipient is expected to make an annual donation of at least HK$200 to City University of Hong Kong for student support via CityU Alumni Club when they are in employment after graduation. This term will be incorporated into all scholarship/prize/award/bursary schemes, whether they are donated by external donors or contributed by University funding, with effect from February 2008.
