The 2017 China National Conference on Big Data and Social Computing (BDSC2017) was held at Northwest Normal University (NWNU) in Lanzhou on August 12 and 13, 2017, jointly co-organized by College of Computer Science and Engineering at SWNU, School of Information at Renmin University of China (RUC), and Centre for Communication Research (CCR)/Web Mining Lab (WML) of City University of Hong Kong (CityU). Over a hundred scholars from a variety of disciplines including computer science, communication, complex science, management, economics, psychology, and digital humanities in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the U.S., and elsewhere presented their latest works on social computing at the interdisciplinary conference.
Prof. Jonathan Zhu, director of CCR and founder of WML, served a co-chair of the conference. In the opening session, he gave a keynote speech on the origin, evolution and future directions of computational social science. He played a similar role at the 2012 CCF China National Conference on Social Computing, which was held in November 2012 and co-organized by RUC and CityU. The newly formed Steering Committee of BDSC Conference, of which Prof. Zhu is a vice chair, has decided to hold the conference series once every year from 2017 on. BDSC2018 will be held in Tianjin in late June 2018.
