Professor Mike Yao presented a "From Media Equation to Uncanny Valley - How Humanlike Features in Technology Design Affect Human-machine Communication" seminar on 6 March 2023. Professor Mike Yao is the Head of the Charles H. Sandage Department of Advertising in the College of Media at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication since 2018. Prof. Yao's research focuses on digitally mediated social behavior and human-technology interaction, specifically interested in emerging technologies such as virtual and augmented reality, virtual assistants, and artificial intelligence. In the seminar, Professor Yao showed the latest research progress of the Technology and Social Behavior Research Lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, emphasizing how humanlike features impact human-chatbot communication and other communicative processes. Professor Yao discussed anthropomorphic design's challenges, potential benefits, and ethical risks with the participants. Over 70 faculty members and students from both online and offline attended the seminar.
