Advertising Summer School in UIUC 2019

A group of 19 students majoring in MDCM and TVB spent a fun and fruitful summer learning about the advertising scene in Chicago.

BA Dubai Study Tour 2017

38 undergraduate students visited one of the key "global cities" – Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from 17-23 May 2017. Dubai is a major tourist, transportation, financial, and educational hub in the Middle East and has become known for its rapid economic ascend over the past 30 years. The students had an opportunity to learn about the history, culture, and media of the region and meet their peers from the American University of Dubai. They also visited Al Arabiya TV Station, which enabled them to learn more about the media industry in the area.


   
   

MA Europe Study Tour 2017

23 students from the MACNM and MAIMC programmes visited Dresden, Prague, Vienna and Budapest from 11-21 May 2017. They explored the European countries to observe how media cover social problems, and how people in the democratic society react and deal with the issues during economic crisis. This study tour allowed students to have a deeper understanding on how new media are involved in delivering information and used by various parties in promoting ideas and information exchanges.

   
   

BA Myanmar Study Tour 2016

A group of BAMDCM and BATVB students took part in the Myanmar Study Tour from 18-27 May 2016. Besides visiting the unique heritage in Myanmar e.g. Sule Pagoda, Kyaukhtatgyi Pagoda, Shwedagon Pagoda and Golden Rock, the students also had a chance to explore and met with some representatives from the local organisations e.g. Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business, Democracy Reporting International, Democratic Voice of Burma and Myanmar Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour. Through this tour, the students have gained deeper understanding on the issues of communication and cultural identity across borders, as well as the ethnic peoples’ networking and livelihood strategies.

   
   

MA Russia Study Tour 2016

A group of 18 students from the MACNM and MAIMC programmes visited Moscow and St. Petersburg, the two major cities in Russia, to explore the political, economic and social aspects of Russia. After this tour, the students produced documentaries and e-magazines covering the unique culture, history, religion, and citizens’ role in political deliberation in a post-communist society. The study tour was held from 8-18 May 2016.

   
   

MA Europe Study Tour 2015

44 students from the MACNM and MAIMC programmes joined the study tour to Europe from 9-19 May 2015. Led by Dr He Zhou and Dr Li Xigen, the students explored the unique culture in Paris, Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome and Amsterdam. By visiting various institutions, historical sites and interacting with the local residents, students acquired a better understanding of the interplay among the states, the media and civil society. Their international perspectives and professional experience were also enhanced.

   
   

BAISC Singapore Study Tour 2014

Singapore, being Hong Kong’s closest competitor in Asia, has launched its own public and media campaigns to boost tourism in recent years. Through this study tour, 25 students majoring in BA Integrated Strategic Communication (BAISC) had a chance to learn about various communication strategies involved in city branding and tourism promotion. The group also met up the faculty members from Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University and the representatives from international PR firm The Hoffman Agency to have a deeper understanding of the promotion campaigns of the city. The study tour was held from 3-7 March 2014.

   
   

MAIMC US Study Tour 2013

29 MAIMC students joined the study tour to the US from 6-15 April 2013. New media are rapidly changing the way we search, access and create news and information. By participating in the Broadcasting Education Association (BEA) annual conference (one of the world’s leading broadcast sector conferences), the students had the opportunity to attend seminars and workshops featuring the leaders in the worlds of broadcasting, audio, video, film, internet, telecommunications, social media, etc. It also helped enhance the students’ understanding of current issues in the field of communication and mass media in relation to public relations practices.

   
   

MACNM US Study Tour on Media and Democracy 2012

In the year for US president election, 27 MA students from the Master of Communication and New Media (MACNM) visited Washington DC and New York from 17-25 May 2012 to observe first-hand and covered the different aspects of the US presidential election activities. Led by Dr. Joe He and Dr. Li Xigen, students have taken up various roles related to their expertise areas. Some have shot documentaries, some have done journalistic reporting and while others published magazines.


   
   

MAIMC US Study Tour 2012

48 MA students from the Master of Integrated Marketing Communication (MAIMC) took part in a study tour to Los Angeles and Las Vegas from 14 to 22 April 2012. There they attended the National Association of Broadcasters seminars, and visited the trade show on the next-generation new media products and technologies. Led by Dr. Chen Ni, they also toured the Warner Brothers and Universal Studios in Hollywood to understand how new media have been incorporated into the production of entertainment.


   
   

Taiwan Elections Study Tour 2012

The Department sent 120 students to Taiwan from 8 to 15 January 2012 to observe the Presidential and Legislative Elections in Taipei. This was the largest study tour even organized by the Department.

The Taiwan elections were held on 14 January 2012. The incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou beat the challenger, DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ying-wen, to win a second term.

Accompanied by six faculty members, the group consists of 51 BAMC students, 34 BAISC students, 30 MA students, two Elder Academy students, and one exchange student from Australia. Students observed campaign rallies and visited many cultural and historical sites.

A photo exhibition was held from 13 to 20 April, 2012 at the CityU main campus.


   
   

BAISC Global Experience Tour 2010

A group of 57 students from BA in Integrated Strategic Communication (BAISC) visited the World Expo on a study tour to Shanghai from 24 to 27 May 2010.

This tour aims to "broaden students' horizon to state-of-art media and design" and to give them an opportunity to "create visual communication projects in a real-life context," according to Dr. Ming Cheung, program leader of BAISC. Students took theme-based photography of people, objects, and buildings.


   
   

MA Study Tour to USA 2010

As part of the Department's effort to deepen students' global experiences, 43 MA students from both the Integrated Marketing Communication (MAIMC) and Communication and New Media (MACNM) took part in a study tour to Las Vegas from 10 to 19 April 2010. There they attended the National Association of Broadcasters seminars, and visited a trade show of 1,400 companies on the next-generation new media products and technologies. Led by Dr. Chen Ni, they also toured the Warner Brothers and Universal Studios in Hollywood to understand how new media have been incorporated into the production of entertainment.
