Associate of Social Science in Event Management

PROGRAMME AIMS

Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:

  • Organize and manage activities, projects and events responsibly to meet quality standards;
  • Perform administrative and supervisory tasks pertaining to event management in commercial, public, and non-profit sectors;
  • Critically examine social, cultural, community and ethical issues regarding events from a social science perspective;
  • Relate the socio-cultural issues, major ideas in arts and humanities, science and technology affecting the event sector in local, national, and regional contexts;
  • Apply language (including English and Chinese), communication, interpersonal skills and information technologies in relation to event management.

FURTHER STUDIES AND CAREER PROSPECTS

  • Graduates who wish to pursue further studies may be granted entry into senior Years of selected Bachelor of Social Science programmes offered by City University of Hong Kong, and self-financing Bachelor of Science degree programme in Convention and Event Management by Hong Kong Polytechnic University. They are also eligible for various social science degree programmes offered by other local universities, and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied Social Science offered in Hong Kong by Sheffield Hallam University, UK in conjunction with CityU.   • Event management will become more popular in coming decade. The growth and professionalism of the sector, particularly in the non-commercial sector, would undoubtedly demand more sophisticated talents. Graduates have abundant employment opportunities and are competent to work in junior management positions in the event sector.

MAIN SUBJECT AREAS

  • The curriculum has two components: general education and specialized study in event management.
    General Education comprises courses covering five domains: Arts and Humanities; Science and Technology; Life Management; Regional and Global Issues; and Language.

    The core courses on event management include:

    • Introduction to Event Management
    • Understanding Customer Behaviour
    • Behaviour in Organizations
    • Event and Festival Management
    • Marketing in the Event Sector
    • MICE Management
    • Finance and Fundraising
    • Election and Campaign Management
    • Cross Cultural Communication

 

In particular, students will have the opportunity to apply what they have learned to real-life situations and get themselves prepared for employment through an industrial attachment or integrative project in related sectors.
