Associate of Social Science in Social Work
PROGRAMME AIMS
Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:
- Apply the knowledge and skills of generalist social work practice to working with individuals, groups and communities;
- Exercise appropriate judgement and take responsibility in planning, implementing, and evaluating social work practice;
- Analyse ethical issues and dilemmas in social work practice, and internalize social work values and attitudes in developing as a professional;
- Relate major psychological, socio-political and cultural issues in the local and global contexts and ideas in arts and humanities, science and technology to social work practice;
- Apply interpersonal, communication, information technology, quantitative and analytical, critical thinking, problem solving and self-directed lifelong learning skills in their personal and professional life.
FURTHER STUDIES AND CAREER PROSPECTS
- Graduates who wish to pursue further study in social work may be granted entry into senior years of UGC-funded Bachelor of Social Work programmes offered by CityU. Those who prefer to study part-time can apply for admission to the Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Social Work offered by CityU.
- Graduates can also apply for admission to senior years of other selected Bachelor of Social Science programmes offered by City University of Hong Kong and other local universities and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied Social Science offered in Hong Kong by Sheffield Hallam University, UK in conjunction with CityU. - Graduates are qualified for appointment as Social Work Assistants in both the government and non-government organizations in the field of family welfare services, community development services, rehabilitation services, children and youth services, services for offenders and drug abusers and services for senior citizens.
PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

Graduates are qualified for registration as Registered Social Worker (RSW) under the Social Workers Registration Ordinance.
MAIN SUBJECT AREAS
The curriculum has two components: general education and specialized study in social work.
General Education comprises courses covering five domains: Arts and Humanities, Science and Technology, Life Management, Regional and Global Issues, and Language.
Social work courses include:
- Understanding Human Growth and Behaviour
- Administrative Practices and Programme Management
- Social Policy and Social Welfare in Hong Kong
- Social work professional knowledge and skills
- Elective courses to discuss application of social work to different service user groups
- Field practicum
