Associate of Social Science
PROGRAMME AIMS
Upon successful completion of this programme, students will be able to:
- Describe the basic concepts and theories in social science that explain human, societal and global phenomena;
- Examine the major socio-political, cultural and economic issues affecting human behaviours in the local, national, regional and global contexts;
- Analyse major human and social issues in contemporary society through inter-disciplinary studies, including major ideas in arts and humanities, and science and technology;
- Use various data collection methods and apply information technologies to analyze and present data;
- Apply effective communication skills (in English and Chinese) in relating with a variety of people.
FURTHER STUDIES AND CAREER PROSPECTS
- Graduates who wish to pursue further studies may be granted entry into senior years of selected Bachelor of Social Science programmes offered by City University of Hong Kong. They are also eligible for various social science degree programmes offered by other local universities and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied Social Science offered in Hong Kong by Sheffield Hallam University, UK in conjunction with CityU. - Graduates are competent to work in junior-level management positions in various fields, including human resources, business and management, media, health care, customer services, social service, and so forth.
MAIN SUBJECT AREAS
In Year One, students study the following foundation and generic courses:
- Sociology
- Introduction to Political Studies
- Economics for Social Studies
- Science, Technology and Society
- Justice and Society
- Critical Thinking & Problem Solving
In Year Two, students take three generic courses: Social Research, Cross Cultural Communication and China in 21st Century. In addition, students are expected to choose a total of four courses from the following six electives:
- Governance in the Global Age
- Crime and Society
- Society and Economy
- Comparative Politics
- Urban Society & Global Cities
- Culture and Identity
