(Applicable to Normative 4-year degree students admitted to CLASS, Advanced Standing I and Transfer-in students admitted to CLASS departments between 2014/15 and 2015/16)
To introduce students to the range of disciplines in liberal arts and social sciences offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) through cross-disciplinary learning.
Upon completion of the College Requirement, students will have acquired foundational knowledge of different disciplines in the College. Students will also have developed broader perspectives and enhanced critical thinking skills in their academic as well as intellectual pursuit. In addition, students will be able to demonstrate the attitude and/or ability to accomplish discovery and/or innovation.
Students will take seven College Core Courses (at 2 credit units each) and the College Mentoring Course (1 credit unit), total 15 credit units for fulfilment of the College Requirement in their first-year of study in CLASS. (see Table 1).

Courses in Table 1 have already been phased out. Students can take the following prescribed courses approved by the College Board to recover failed grades or to improve D grades in the 3-credit unit course(s). Students who wish to apply to take the prescribed courses should return the completed application form in person to the College Office c/o G7612, 7/F Academic 1 by the end of the course add/drop period in the semester concerned. Late application will normally not be considered.

2. | After the first attempt, only two repeat attempts are permitted. The attempt(s) of College core course is/are inclusive. According to Academic Regulations for 4-year Undergraduate Degrees, students’ studies will be terminated if they fail to pass a required course, or its equivalent/substitute course, after three attempts. |

Students entering the four-year degree with Advanced Standing I between 2014/15 and 2015/16 are required to take three courses (total 9 credit units) from a list of courses approved by the College Board for fulfilment of the College Requirement. The courses chosen to fulfil the College Requirement must be offered outside the students’ home departments (see Table 2).
Double counting of courses is permissible between the Major/Minor Requirement and College Requirement. However, the credit units would count only once toward the total credits on graduation for the student, regardless of the number of requirements the course serves to fulfil. (Clause 4.4 under Academic Regulations for 4-year Undergraduate Degrees)
A student (of 2014 entry) who changes his/her home major of undergraduate degree within CLASS in subsequent years of study, the student should choose courses which are offered outside his/her new home department to fulfil the College Requirement.
Students who are transferred from another College/School to CLASS departments between 2014/15 and 2015/16 are required to take three courses (total 9 credit units) offered outside their home departments to be chosen from Table 2 below to fulfil the CLASS College Requirement, following the same arrangements for Advanced Standing I students.
If a transfer-in student has already fulfilled the University Gateway Education English Requirement by successfully completed a Discipline-specific English course (GE English II) in or reorganized by CityU, the student will not be required to take another GE English II course after transferring to CLASS.

Exemption on College Requirement courses for Advanced Standing I and Transfer-in Students between 2014/15 and 2015/16
Students who are granted approval for exemption on a College Requirement course in CLASS are required to choose another course within the approved list of College Requirement courses offered outside their home departments to fulfil the College Requirement. Transfer-in students should take a College Requirement course offered outside their new home departments in lieu of the exempted course. Credit units are not earned for the exempted course.
Students entering the 4-year degree with Advanced Standing II will be given full exemption from College Requirement.
