Prospective Students Get a Taste of CLASS Lectures

Despite the angst during the pandemic, big dreams of tomorrow’s talent will never be put on hiatus. Prospective students from Ma On Shan Tsung Tsin Secondary School visited CityU in person to attend taster lectures offered by College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) on 28 July 2022.

It is thanks to the faculty members for unfolding professional and scholarly wisdom of the disciplines with the secondary school students. Dr Dannii YEUNG, Associate Professor of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, delivered a taster lecture on the introduction of Psychology. To engage the students in a more interactive way, she first asked them to take part in two experiments, which explained the concepts of inattentional blindness and goal orientation manipulation. She further demonstrated the use of the eye-tracking technique in understanding human behaviour. A student was invited to try the portable eye-tracker while looking at the visual materials. The research device enabled an analysis of one’s facial expressions in real-time.

To help students learn more about the features of the undergraduate programmes, Dr Peppina LEE, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Education and Quality Assurance) of CLASS, later gave an admission talk about the options and entrance requirements of CLASS programmes. Dr Lee also outlined multiple study pathways and international programmes involving different schools and overseas partner universities. She then spoke of the scholarships for local JUPAS entrants as well. With such flexibility, studying at CLASS opens up more possibilities for the students.

Prof LIU Yu-li, Head of the Department of Media and Communication (COM), greeted the students and gave an introduction before the facility tour. Guided by COM representatives, the group toured Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre to have a glimpse of the learning facilities, including the Omnimedia Digital Newsroom, 3D Virtual TV Studio, and Advertising Design and Shooting Studio. Such an in-person experience addressed the need of the aspirational students. It allowed them to envision themselves at CityU CLASS, where they could create a bond by literally traversing the campus and taking in the university’s academic atmosphere.
