Welcome On Board for a Literary and Artistic Journey

We have been practising social distance measures over the past year. There are different things that we can do to entertain ourselves, express our emotions and relieve stress at home. Indulging ourselves in movies, books, or other art forms is an example. The pandemic also forces authors, filmmakers, and artists to rethink how they create and pass down their works.

Co-organising with the Hong Kong Literary Criticism Society, CityU’s Department of Chinese and History (CAH) and Chinese Civilisation Centre organised a total of three seminars in January 2021. DUNG Kai-cheung, a Hong Kong-born Chinese language writer, discussed novels and stories in the inaugural seminar on 20 January 2021. MUI Cheuk-yin, choreographer and dancer, linked literature and body movements in her sharing on 22 January 2021. LIU Chi-keung, film director, will share about his cross-disciplinary creations, which combine literature and clips featuring Hong Kong street scenes, on 30 January 2021.

Guest speakers for the seminars in February to April include film art director MAN Lim-chung, theatre artist and educator Dr LO Wai-luk, film director Norris WONG, classical music critic Dr CHIAO Yuan-pu, Chinese language and literature associate professor Dr Howard CHOY, journalist CHIANG Chia-Hua, curator Vennes CHENG, Hong Kong literature expert Professor Lenoard CHAN KWOK-kou, and photographer Alfred KO.

Assistant Professor at CAH Dr MA Ka-fai and founder and chairperson of Hong Kong Literary Criticism Society Dr NG Mei-kwan take turns to serve as the moderator.

To encourage the exchange of ideas between the speakers and audience, a reward scheme is designed for CAH undergraduate and postgraduate students. They shall attend a talk and author a report in less than 3000 words in Chinese or 1500 words in English, summarising their reflection on the subject discussed. Every student can submit up to three reports (themed around three talks) for a chance to win the first prize or second prize, with 5 and 15 awardees respectively.

For those interested in learning more about literature, films and arts, please check the event schedule at CAH’s website and join the seminars via this link. Pre-registration is not necessary.
