Opportunity for Undergraduate Students to Gain Research Experience

Apart from building students’ competence and knowledge in the major area of study, CLASS always works toward cultivating students’ passion for discovery by offering different types of learning experience. In light of this commitment, CLASS is launching the brand new Research Volunteer Scheme (RVS) from academic year 2020-21.

RVS is a cross-disciplinary research apprenticeship. Through the Scheme, the Principal Investigators (PIs) of ongoing projects can recruit undergraduate students to assist in their research works on a voluntary basis. As it is non-credit bearing, students can feel free to explore their research interest without worrying about their grades. Some PIs even accept applicants from different CLASS departments, meaning that students may choose a project outside their areas of study and broaden their interdisciplinary perspective.

During the research period, students can learn from experienced researchers on research skills and methodologies. They can gain hands-on research experience and integrate textbook knowledge into practice through assisting in different research procedures, from conducting literature reviews, collecting data, conducting survey and experiments, to analysing data and preparing final reports. Upon successful completion of a research project, students will receive a certificate issued by CLASS, adding value to their CVs.

More information, sharing of past participants, and openings can be found on the webpage of RVS. To be considered for a project, students are expected to take the initiative to contact the PIs directly.
