Professor Dennis WONG, Associate Dean (Student Life and Learning) of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), delivered an admissions talk to about 100 Form 6 students at Pui Ching Middle School on 31 October 2017. Joining Professor Wong in the school talk were Dr Andus WONG, Assistant Professor of the Department of Applied Social Sciences, and Natalie MOK, an Elite Student Leader in the College.
Professor Wong gave an overview of the College’s academic programmes and admissions requirements. “CityU is a world-class university. Apart from developing students’ professional knowledge and skills, we provide many opportunities for students to go global to cultivate multicultural understandings and foster whole-person development,” he said. In his talk, Professor Wong discussed many options of international exchange, overseas summer schools, cultural and language immersion, internships and leadership training programmes that are integral parts of CLASS students’ curriculum. He also introduced the Joint Bachelor’s Degree Program between CityU and Columbia University. Many students showed excitement about the opportunity to earn two bachelor’s degrees in 4 years, which this joint programme provides.
Psychology has been a popular major that many secondary school students feel attracted to, but “psychology is not what you think it is,” explained Dr Andus Wong, Associate Major Leader of Psychology at CLASS. “Psychology is a scientific study of human behaviours. It is evidence-based, and it covers a wide range of areas.” Dr Wong explained to the students what courses are covered in the psychology programme at CLASS and what kinds of jobs psychology students take on after they graduate from CityU.
Students at Pui Ching Middle School were happy to meet with Natalie, an alumna. Natalie, an Elite Student Leader at CLASS majoring in Asian and International Studies with a minor in Korean Studies, was very happy to visit her alma mater. Natalie shared her wonderful experiences participating in a summer school at Kyung Hee University in Seoul and her internship training at the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, and the students appreciated hearing about them. With regard to selecting a major, Natalie advised the students to study what they would be most interested in.
Participating students were attentive to the presentations and enthusiastic about asking questions. The talk ended with a round of applause and sincere appreciation for the speakers.
