CityU Forges Links with Elite US Universities

Prof Mark THOMPSON, Director of Southeast Asia Research Centre and Dr Chiara FORMICHI of Cornell University sign the agreement.

A signing ceremony for the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) of CityU's Southeast Asia Research Centre (SEARC) with the Southeast Asia programmes of Cornell University and Northern Illinois University was held on 12 June (Friday) at CityU's Connie Fan Multi-media Conference Room. President Professor Way KUO of CityU and Provost Professor Arthur ELLIS attended the ceremony along with SEARC Director, Professor Mark THOMPSON.

Cornell University's Southeast Asia Program is the most respected of its kind globally, while Northern Illinois University houses the only centre in the world dedicated to Burma/Myanmar Studies. So it is quite an honour for CityU and SEARC to be affiliated with such fine institutions.

The MoU with Cornell, in particular, will help to strengthen the ties between the two universities, especially in light of CityU's joint collaboration with Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine. The MoU with the two institutions is in the context of a pioneering and groundbreaking workshop on "Religious Minorities in Asia" jointly organized by SEARC and the Cornell and Northern Illinois Southeast Asia programmes, and held on the day of the MoU signing.

The keynote speaker of the workshop, Professor John SIDEL, is a distinguished expert on Southeast Asia. He is the Sir Patrick Gillam Professor of International and Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science. SEARC's Associate Director, Dr Thomas PATTON, who is an expert in Myanmar and a participant in the workshop, agrees that this is an important milestone in the life of CityU.
