New students welcomed at CLASS Orientation

The College extended a warm welcome to new students during the orientation activities held in late August 2015.

About 200 new freshmen were greeted by their mentors at their first mentor-mentee gathering. Later in this semester, they will have more opportunities to mingle with their mentors and make friends in the freshmen luncheons and gatherings to be organised by the College.

At the College Orientation Ceremony, Professor Xiaowei ZANG, Dean of College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), welcomed the newcomers to the CLASS family and introduced them to the College's Associate/Assistant Deans and heads of the various departments.

Professor Zang encouraged them to learn more about the College while interacting with different people on campus. "Our orientation week is a great way for you to get familiar with the College, departments, and programmes, to meet our faculty and your fellow students, and most importantly, to start thinking seriously how our College and Departments can help you realise your hopes and dreams about your life ahead," said Professor Zang. "Our College is a community where you will grow and flourish. You will experience personal development and transformation here in the next four years!"

The new students were also advised by the Dean to share their knowledge, challenge themselves and their professors, and have fun in learning. In CLASS, students are empowered to transform themselves and make a difference while striving for academic excellence.

At the Orientation Ceremony, students Titian Tam and Pinky Wong shared their rewarding learning experiences from the College Study Tour in Singapore and the Summer Professional Internship in Australia respectively. Similar co-curricular and internationalisation activities offered by the College have been fostering personal growth and all-round development in students.

Following the Orientation Ceremony were advising sessions for the new students organised by the College and Departments. At the advising session for the College's first-year students, Dr Peppina LEE, Associate Dean (Undergraduate Curriculum), offered the newcomers useful tips on how to get well prepared for the challenges ahead. Dr Lee encouraged them to set their goals early, explore possibilities, and learn to make the right choices.

The new students were impressed by the orientation activities, which made them feel welcome and gave them helpful information about life and learning on campus. Some students expressed concerns about their forthcoming studies and the subject or discipline in which they would major eventually. The faculty advisors, staff members, and student mentors will help them with advice and guidance in their learning.
