Prof Xiaowei Zang, Dean of CLASS

Welcome to the first issue of CITY CLASS – a chronicle of events in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS). CITY CLASS reflects the spirit of the college, and it serves as the communicative platform for our departments, staff and students as well as the public to understand our work and achievements.

CLASS is well positioned and defined by its name – it is where liberal arts and social sciences converge. While the two disciplines might seem unconnected, they link to explore "humans", from human nature to the comprehensive studies of politics, society, and cultures, etc.; all these aspects illustrate the essence of CLASS. For many years, Hong Kong people have shown high levels of morality and integrity, which are very much connected to the teaching, research and knowledge transfer by scholars in the humanities and social sciences to Hong Kong society. I would like to present to our readers the college's outstanding performance and achievements in the past few years.

CLASS scholars are reputed for their remarkable diligence and relentless efforts in the pursuit of excellence. These have earned recognition for CLASS by distinguished academic and research bodies. For instance, in the Hong Kong Research Assessment Exercise 2014, the Department of Media and Communication was rated number one in Hong Kong in the research area of communication and media studies; two teachers from Applied Social Sciences were each awarded a UGC Teaching Award; and Linguistics moved to 18th best in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015. These achievements are testimony to the dedication and professionalism of CLASS educators.

CLASS will continue to strive for excellence in teaching, research and knowledge transfer and in promoting equality and justice in society.
