College requirement - 2012/13

(Applicable to Normative 4-year degree students and Advanced Standing I students admitted to CLASS in 2012/13)

Aim of the College Requirement

To introduce students to the range of disciplines in liberal arts and social sciences offered by the College through cross-disciplinary learning.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO) of the College Requirement

Upon completion of the College Requirement, students will have acquired foundational knowledge of different disciplines in the College. Students will also have developed broader perspectives and enhanced critical thinking skills in their academic as well as intellectual pursuit. Students should be able to demonstrate the attitude and/or ability to accomplish discovery and/or innovation.

Course structure

Normative 4-year degree students admitted to CLASS in 2012/13

Normative 4-year degree students admitted to CLASS in 2012/13 are required to take five College Core Courses (total 15 credit units) under the Year one curriculum to complete the College Requirement (see Table 1).

The following College Core Courses have already been phased out. Students can take the following prescribed courses approved by the College Board to recover failed grades or to improve D grades in the 3-credit unit course(s). Students who wish to apply to take the prescribed courses should return the completed application form in person to the College Office c/o G7612, 7/F Academic 1 by the end of the course add/drop period in the semester concerned. Late application will normally not be considered.

Notes:
1. The prescribed courses will be offered by departments at least once in each academic year (either Semester A or B), subject to class size policy of the University.
2. After the first attempt, only two repeat attempts are permitted. The attempt(s) of College core course is/are inclusive. According to Academic Regulations for 4-year Undergraduate Degrees, students' studies will be terminated if they fail to pass a required course, or its equivalent/substitute course, after three attempts.
3. Course grades for all attempts will appear on the student's transcript, but only the latest grade earned will be included in the calculation of the student's grade point averages.

Advanced Standing I and Transfer-in students admitted to CLASS departments in 2012/13

Students entering the four-year degree with Advanced Standing I and students transferred from another College/School to CLASS in 2012/13 are required to take three College Core Courses (total 9 credit units) prescribed by their home departments for specific Majors to fulfil the College Requirement (see Table 2).

Advanced Standing I students (of 2012 entry) who failed a College Core Course prescribed by their home departments must repeat the same course in the following semester to recover a failure. After the first attempt, only two repeat attempts are permitted.

Advanced Standing II students

Students entering the 4-year degree with Advanced Standing II will be given full exemption from College Requirement.
