CityU was ranked 198th in the Times Higher World University Rankings in 2004 and rose to 147th in 2008, a trend that reflects the quality of our research and teaching, and the commitment of many dedicated and talented staff.

  TeleEye goes public
TeleEye, a remote monitoring technology, represents the first instance of a technology developed by a local university being listed on stock exchange. TeleEye was founded in 1994 and listed in 2001. The product has received 20 local and international awards since 1995.

  Marine conservation excellence
The Centre for Marine Environmental Research and Innovative Technology is one the eight “Areas of Excellence” selected by the University Grants Committee. It has also been designated by a United Nations body as the first Regional Centre of Excellence in Marine Pollution.

  Asia electronics fair awards
Two dynamic young companies under CityU Enterprises have been honoured with major awards, including the overall top prize, by the Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association (HKIEA) at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2006. The TeleEye Group and DynaCity Technology won Gold Awards in the HKIEA awards for Outstanding Innovation and Technology Products 2006 in the categories of “Security Products” and “Parts/Components”, respectively. The TeleEye Group was also awarded the overall Grand Prize, selected from 22 finalists in the four categories.

  Climate study
CityU has joined forces with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to set up a joint laboratory through its affiliate, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, to conduct atmospheric research that will have far-reaching effects on our understanding of climate change, especially in southern China and the Pearl River Delta region. The joint laboratory also engages in comprehensive studies of the overall climatic changes taking place in China and the wider Asia Pacific region.

  State Key Lab
CityU has set up the State Key Laboratory of Millimetre Waves with approval from the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is the first such laboratory in the engineering discipline in Hong Kong. The laboratory focuses on researching the principal theories and applications of millimetre waves.

  Awards at Chinese National Exhibition of Inventions
CityU was awarded one Gold Award, two Silver Awards and one Bronze Award for its innovative applied research projects at the Chinese National Exhibition of Inventions 2006. The four award-winning projects are the Computer-Assisted Simulation System for Orthognathic Surgery project (Gold Award), the Active RFID System (Silver Award), the Fish Bioassay for Drug Screening and Environmental Toxicity Testing project (Silver Award) and the Real-time Lip-sync and Facial Animation System (Bronze Award).

  Antenna calibration services
The Wireless Communications Research Centre of CityU has become the first non-governmental laboratory accredited in the Asia-Pacific region to provide antenna calibration services. The research centre was recognised for its capabilities in performing calibration on antennae, until recently a service only available regionally at the national-laboratory level.

  CAE Foreign membership
Professor Way Kuo, President of CityU, was elected as a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The post serves as recognition of Professor Kuo’s contribution to the field of reliability design for microelectronics products and systems.

  Merit Award for plasma science contribution
Chair Professor Paul Chu Kim-ho has been awarded the 2007 IEEE/ NPSS (Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society) Merit Award for his outstanding technical contributions to the field of plasma science. Professor Chu is the first Hong Kong academic, and the only one from an Asian institute, to receive this honour since the award was established in 1972.

  Prestigious award for advancing chaos theory
Chair Professor Chen Guanrong was conferred a second-class award under the State Natural Science Award in recognition of his achievements and contributions to the field of chaos theory. Professor Chen has been engaged in the research of chaos theory for the past 20 years and is renowned for his discovery of the Chen System – a reputed chaos system well known to the international academic community.

  Nanotechnology excellence
The Centre of Super-Diamond and Advanced Films, led by Chinese Academy of Sciences Academician Chair Professor Lee Shuit-tong, has obtained 15 patents for nanotechnology-related products since its establishment in 1998. Professor Lee was conferred a State Natural Science second-class award in 2002 and again in 2005. The centre recently received $13 million funding from Research Grants Council Collaborative Research Fund 2008-09.

  Invention awards
Innovative technology created by CityU researchers earned two gold medals and a bronze medal at the 35th International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products in Geneva, Switzerland in 2007. The two gold medal-winning projects were Fish Bioassay for Drug Screening and Environmental Toxicity Testing (Principal Investigator: Dr Cheng Shuk-han) and Smart Ambience Therapy (Principal Investigator: Chair Professor Horace Ip Ho-shing). In addition, a bronze medal went to the Universal Wireless Charging Platform, which was designed by Chair Professor Ron Hui Shu-yuen.

  Artificial Intelligence
Dr Andy Chun Hon-wai has received four awards from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence for the artificial intelligence systems he designed. Dr Chun has been performing applied research in AI for more than 20 years. His research helps enterprises maximise productivity, resulting in better quality of service. Many organisations in Hong Kong have benefited from it, such as Hongkong International Terminals, Hospital Authority, Airport Authority and MTR Corporation.

  Industry award
Genetel Pharmaceuticals, a CityU subsidiary company, was awarded the “Technological Achievement Grand Award” for its cervical cancer diagnostic technology in the 2006 Hong Kong Awards for Industries. CityU is the first tertiary institution in Hong Kong whose subsidiary company has received the Grand Award. The research team led by Chair Professor Michael Yang Mengsu developed SNIPERTM-HPV for the early detection of the human papillomavirus, which causes virtually all cases of cervical cancer.

Mr Patrick Tam Ka-ming, Associate Professor at the School of Creative Media, received the Best Director and Best Screenplay Awards for his movie After this, our exile in the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards. The movie received 11 awards at local and overseas film festivals.

  Web-based education award
Dr Apple Fok Wai-ping, a research fellow at CityU has won the Best Software Award at the “Third International Competition of the Non-Commercial Software Systems, Tools and Products for Web-Based Education” in 2007. The award-winning Web-based English Learning System is a tool designed for both students and teachers in primary schools. The project received a sponsorship from the Quality Education Fund of the HKSAR Government in 2004, which led to collaborations with local schools.

  Hong Kong ICT Awards
CityU staff and alumni have received ten awards in the first Hong Kong Information and Communications Technology Awards. The A8 WiFi Cellular Base Station project received the highest honour, the Award of the Year. Other award-winning projects include a Flash-based Web Builder FLABER, Hardware project entitled “Retro-directive Arrays for Mobile Communications Systems”, interactive game “Moving Magic” and the PDA Learning and Interaction Platform of the College of Business.
