Introduction

The Department of Chemistry
(formerly the Department of Biology and Chemistry)

The Department of Chemistry at CityU strives for excellence in teaching and research. The Department is unique for its multidisciplinary academics that encompass chemistry, biology and environmental science. The teaching and research activities of the Department are well supported by excellent laboratories with advanced equipment and facilities.

The Department offers one undergraduate major, BSc in Chemistry. In addition, we admit students of Advanced Standing II to BSc in Applied Biology and BSc in Environmental Science and Management from the academic year of 2017/18. All these majors focus on the application of knowledge, enabling students to understand important scientific issues, current technologies and the future challenges facing Hong Kong, its immediate region and the world.

At the postgraduate level, we launch a new taught Master of Science in Chemistry in 2017/18 and offer Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy research programmes in which students conduct advanced research on pressing scientific problems.

Our research is among the top in the latest Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong in 2014. One of the highlights of our research has been the leading role we have played in the State Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution (SKLMP) and the Center of Super-Diamond and Advanced Films (COSDAF).

The Department aims to develop close links with the public and industrial sectors to help meet society’s needs in all of its research endeavours. From undergraduate to staff projects, we carry out research in collaboration with industry partners, government bodies and local and overseas universities with the goal of working towards a better future for all.
